Legal documents can be intimidating, more so if you have been asked to make or execute one, whether for a friend, a family member or even for yourself. A general power of attorney is required should you need to appoint someone, be it a member of your family, a friend or a colleague to represent you or do certain things for you such as transact with banks and businesses.

In essence your appointed agent or representative may, aside from simply opening and depositing funds from your bank account, he or she can even close your bank account, with no legal impediment. You may even choose to allow your representative to manage certain businesses and sign or enter any legally binding contract on specific terms and concerns.
Your representative will have as much power depending on how much you would like to have covered in the document. This is the reason why it is best to specify as well which banks or which government agencies and which businesses will be included in the coverage. When it comes to legal documents, it is always better to be more specific and detailed.
It is in many respects similar to an authorization letter or an authorization document. What it does in particular is give your representative the capability to decide on certain matters in your absence. It is thus important to include and specify in the document certain limitations as to the extent of what your representative can do. At the same time, never forget that choose an individual that you can fully trust in handling our finances and be very careful in the choices that you make when it comes to appointing someone as your representative through a legally binding document such as the general power of attorney form.
